Kanpur Mayor Pramila Pandey has taken charge of a campaign to “reclaim” temples allegedly encroached upon in Muslim-majority areas. According to the Kanpur Municipal Corporation, a list of 125 temples under illegal possession has been prepared, and efforts are underway to restore them. Many of these temples are reportedly in ruins, with some missing idols, and others entirely demolished.

Mayor Pandey personally visited sites to identify and reclaim temples as part of the drive. “My aim is not to hurt anyone’s sentiments,” she said. “I want the temples that have disappeared or fallen into ruins to be restored. These temples should have proper gates, cleanliness, and regular worship so they cannot be encroached upon again.”

The campaign has drawn objections from Muslim religious leaders, who fear it could disturb communal harmony. “This temple search campaign may create tensions between communities. We have requested the police to impose restrictions on such activities,” said a local Muslim cleric.

A group of Muslim leaders submitted a memorandum to the Commissionerate Office, raising concerns over the drive. They called for maintaining peace and urged the administration to take a balanced approach.

On visiting Hiramani Ka Purwa, Mayor Pandey and municipal officials identified three temples in a dilapidated condition. “The idols were broken, and the temples were in a state of complete neglect,” she stated. Using her phone’s flashlight, she examined the interiors of the structures. Plans are now in place to clean the temples and install gates to prevent further damage.

Mayor Pandey reiterated her intent behind the campaign. “I only want the forgotten temples of Hindus to be restored so that worship can begin again. Beyond that, there is no other motive.”
