A catering contractor in Lucknow has filed a police complaint against a customer, Madan Lal Vajpayee, who refused to pay Rs 70,550, and allegedly demanded the details of the waiter’s caste and religion.

Pradeep Kumar Gupta, a resident of Lucknow, the state capital, on January 7, 2024, lodged a complaint against his customer, Madan Lal Vajpayee at the Alambagh police station.

The incident reportedly took place in Pawanpuri area, Alambagh, Lucknow, where the contractor, owner of Yash Caterer, had arranged the catering service for Vajpayee’s daughter’s marriage.

According to the contractor, Vajpayee owed him a remaining balance of Rs 70,550, which he was unwilling to pay out of a total agreed-upon sum of Rs 4,25,000, despite repeated requests.

Vajpayee, in his note, stated that the waitress hired during the marriage ceremony was a Muslim and that’s why he won’t pay the money.

The contractor knew Vajpayee and he had arranged several events for him previously. But this time, Vajpayee refused to pay the money, sparking a controversy, according to a report

Madanlal sent a long note to the catering contractor seeking details of the caste and religion of the waiter, as stated by the complainant. In the note, Vajpayee mentioned that he would settle the remaining balance only after the contractor discloses the name and religion of the waitresses.

The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating the matter. Inspector Shivmangal promised the contractor of taking strict action against the accused, if found guilty.
