Mamata Banerjee Calls Refusal to Resign ‘Symbolic Protest’, Alleges ‘Engineered’ Bengal Poll Results

A day after declining to step down as Chief Minister following her party’s defeat, Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday described her decision as a “symbolic protest” against what she alleged was manipulation of election results in West Bengal.

‘Engineered Mandate’ Allegation

Speaking at a meeting with newly elected Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs at her Kalighat residence, Banerjee reiterated that the election outcome was “engineered” and claimed her party would challenge the results legally.

“The BJP has looted the election. We will move the court against this manipulation,” she told party leaders, according to reports.

She also alleged that more than 1,500 TMC offices across the state had been “hijacked” following the results.

Warning Over President’s Rule

In a sharp remark, Banerjee said she was prepared for any constitutional action, including dismissal.

“Let them impose President’s Rule if they want. Let them dismiss me if they want. Let it remain on record as a black day,” she said during the closed-door meeting.

Her comments come amid debate over constitutional procedures, as the term of the current Assembly is set to end soon.

TMC Plans Legal and Political Fightback

Banerjee said the party would continue its fight both politically and legally. She also called for protests, asking party MLAs to wear black clothes on the first day of the Assembly session.

“We might have lost, but we will fight. I defeated them morally,” she said.

The TMC chief also announced the formation of a disciplinary committee within the party, warning that leaders who speak against the party line could face action.

Massive Electoral Setback for TMC

The developments follow a major victory by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule. The TMC’s tally dropped sharply to 80 seats.

The BJP is expected to form the next government, with a swearing-in ceremony likely in the coming days.

Post-Poll Violence and Political Blame Game

The political situation has been further complicated by reports of violence after the results. The TMC has accused BJP workers of attacking its supporters and offices, including incidents in areas like Tollygunge, Kasba, and parts of Howrah.

The BJP, however, has denied the allegations and claimed that some incidents were either exaggerated or carried out by TMC workers to defame the party.

Opposition Voices and Constitutional Questions

Banerjee’s refusal to resign has sparked reactions from political leaders across the country, with some calling for her dismissal. Questions are also being raised about constitutional provisions, as a Chief Minister technically holds office at the pleasure of the Governor until a new government is formed.
