Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the latest Assembly election results across West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry as a “historic and unprecedented” mandate, saying the outcome reflects the people’s trust in development-oriented governance and India’s democratic system.

Addressing BJP workers at the party headquarters in New Delhi, Modi said, “Today’s day is historic, unprecedented; the happiness which accompanies years of penance materialising into results, I am seeing that happiness on the BJP’s workers.”

He added that the results showed public backing for what he called the politics of performance. “People have placed their trust in India’s great democracy, politics of performance and the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’,” he said.

“India’s Constitution has won”: PM on mandate

Modi said the high voter turnout reflected the strength of Indian democracy and framed the verdict as larger than just electoral success.

“Democracy is in our veins. Not just India’s democracy, its Constitution too has won today,” he said.

He also said the outcome signalled a shift in political thinking, arguing that voters had rejected divisive politics in favour of development. “The country has made it clear that it does not want vivad (dispute) but vikas (development),” he said.

Attack on Opposition, claim of ideological shift

In a sharp political attack, Modi alleged that extremist ideologies were finding space within opposition politics.

“Maoism which is ending in the country is finding root in the Congress. Congress should not forget: what has been rejected by the people, those who accept it will also be rejected,” he said.

He also claimed that communism had been “sidelined” in India and suggested that voters were rejecting both left-wing and opposition alliances. “Today’s Bharat wants development, progress, stability… politics of development,” he said.

“BJP means development”: Modi

Reinforcing the party’s campaign narrative, the Prime Minister said voters had repeatedly endorsed the BJP’s governance model.

“Today, more than 30 states of India have BJP-NDA governments. We are committed to the service of the people. People are seeing that where there is BJP, there is development,” he said.

Bengal focus: “A new sunrise”

A major part of Modi’s speech focused on West Bengal, where the BJP made significant gains against the ruling Trinamool Congress.

“This evening of May 4 may be drawing to a close but in the holy land of Bengal a new sunrise has taken place,” he said.

He described the outcome as a turning point for the state. “From today, a journey of the future of Bengal has begun where development and trust will walk hand in hand,” he said, promising round-the-clock work for the state’s development.

Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu also mentioned

Modi also highlighted the BJP’s performance in Assam, calling it a continuation of the party’s strong mandate. “We have scored a hat-trick in Assam,” he said.

Referring to Tamil Nadu and Kerala, he said voters had shown interest in change and development-focused politics, while also praising party organisation across states.

“Nari Shakti and development key pillars”

The Prime Minister also linked the results to women voters, saying they had supported BJP policies.

“Nari Shakti is another pillar of Viksit Bharat,” he said, claiming opposition parties had opposed key women’s empowerment legislation and were now facing public backlash.

Calling the verdict a mandate for stability and growth, Modi ended his speech by thanking voters and party workers. “This is not just a victory of BJP, but a victory of India’s democracy and Constitution,” he said.
