Mohammed Shami says he is not thinking about retirement despite being out of Team India, focusing instead on performance and IPL 2026.

HIGHLIGHTS

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has made it clear that he is not thinking about retirement anytime soon, despite being overlooked by selectors led by Ajit Agarkar.

The 35-year-old pacer, who last played for India during the 2025 Champions Trophy, has been out of the national team for over a year. This comes despite strong performances in domestic cricket, where he picked up 67 wickets for Bengal in the 2025–26 season.

Speaking recently, Shami sent a strong message about his future in the game. “When I get tired, I will call it a day. But I am not even thinking about retirement right now because such thoughts pull you down,” he said.

“I’ve said this earlier too—I’ll leave cricket the day I wake up and feel bored,” he added.

Impressive domestic form fails to secure comeback

Even after regaining full fitness, Shami has not been considered for major series against South Africa and New Zealand, nor for the T20 World Cup. His consistent domestic performances across tournaments like the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy have also not resulted in a recall.

There has also been reported tension between Shami and the selection committee, with the pacer earlier expressing concerns over lack of communication from the board.

Meanwhile, younger fast bowlers have gradually taken over roles in the Indian team, leading to speculation that Indian cricket may be moving on from the experienced seamer.

Injury setbacks and missed opportunities

Shami’s career in recent years has been affected by injuries, which forced him to miss several key bilateral series. Reports also suggest that he opted out of tours like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and England Tests to focus on full recovery.

Despite these setbacks, the pacer insists he still has the drive to continue. “If you start thinking about retirement, it means you are already tired. And if you are tired, it means you are bored. I am neither bored nor lazy. I am enjoying the game,” he said.

Focus shifts to IPL 2026 with Lucknow Super Giants

Shami is now focusing on the upcoming Indian Premier League season, where he will represent Lucknow Super Giants after being traded from Sunrisers Hyderabad.

He had a disappointing IPL 2025 season, picking up just six wickets in nine matches, but is hoping for a fresh start this year.

“As a bowler, I will give my 100 per cent. I’ll perform my responsibilities and try to meet expectations. The rest, I can’t change my luck,” Shami said.

“If Lucknow has trusted me, I will give my all. The main thing is satisfaction—whether I get results based on my preparation,” he added.
