Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti, has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take action against alleged electoral malpractices in the state. She called on the police and local administration to stop “vote-buying” activities through the illegal distribution of money.

This plea came after PDP candidate from Budgam, Agha Syed Muntazir, accused the National Conference (NC) of manipulating the election process. In a letter to the ECI, which he posted on social media, Muntazir claimed that NC was using its political power to intimidate voters.

“JKNC is using the influence of its elected members to scare voters. Illegal money distribution is happening, and my party members and supporters are being threatened,” Muntazir said. He raised concerns about the fairness of the district administration and police, urging the ECI to investigate the situation and ensure a peaceful election.

Mehbooba Mufti shared Muntazir’s letter on social media and called for action. “There are disturbing reports about money being distributed to buy votes in Budgam and Ganderbal. I urge the ECI to take steps to stop these electoral malpractices,” she posted on X (formerly Twitter). She also reminded people of the “rigging” in the 1987 elections, which had serious consequences for the region.

Polling for the second phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir is scheduled for Wednesday, covering 26 Assembly constituencies across six districts, including 11 in the Jammu region and 15 in Kashmir.
