In Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, a Dalit groom was allegedly forcibly thrown off his horse cart and beaten by upper-caste men. The violence erupted on the night of May 20 when the Dalit marriage procession passed through an upper-caste residential area, causing anger among the accused.
The attackers not only assaulted the groom, Naresh Jatav, but also broke the canopy of his horse carriage and threw it into a drain. They looted his gold chain and attacked wedding guests. Some residents poured water on the procession from their rooftops.
A case has been filed against the perpetrators under the Atrocity Act at Karhiya police station. The groom’s brother lodged the complaint, citing that the procession had traveled from Rithodana to Karhiya in Gwalior. The accused—identified as Sanjay, Dalbir, Sandeep, and Anil Rawat—fired guns and wielded knives to intimidate and harm the participants. They also damaged DJ equipment and assaulted those trying to protect the groom.
ASP Niranjan Sharma confirmed the attack and stated that both the primary complaint and a counter-complaint from the other party were registered. The other party alleged that wedding guests were looting money during the festivities, which led to the altercation.
