A 55-year-old man died after allegedly being tied to an electric pole and assaulted by a group of people on suspicion of theft in the Jalalpur area under Chanchal Police Station in Malda district. The incident occurred on Wednesday and has prompted a police investigation. The deceased has been identified as Enamul Haque.

According to family members, Enamul left his house at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday after having dinner. Within a short time, the family was informed that he had allegedly been tied to an electric pole approximately 100 metres from his home and severely beaten with iron rods by a group of people. Upon receiving the information, police from Chanchal Police Station rushed to the spot, rescued the injured man, and took him to a nearby hospital. Doctors on duty declared him dead on arrival. The victim’s wife, Nurjahan Bibi, demanded strict action against those responsible. “We want the culprits to be punished,” she said.

A relative of the deceased condemned the alleged assault, stating that no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands. “We were informed that Enamul had been assaulted and taken to the hospital. The police told us that he had been tied to an electric pole and beaten severely. If someone commits a crime, they should be handed over to the police. No one should be beaten to death like this,” the relative said.

The deceased’s brother, Rahman Haque, told local media that Enamul had reportedly been called out by some local residents on the pretext of attending a picnic. “I do not know what happened afterwards. Later, I received news that my elder brother had been brutally beaten with sticks. There are injury marks all over his body. We do not know why he was killed. We have filed a written complaint with Chanchal Police Station seeking justice. We want the administration to conduct a fair investigation and ensure that those responsible are punished,” he said.

Police said a case has been registered and an investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to police sources, two persons, identified as Nurul Islam and Nasim Akhtar, have been arrested in connection with the case. They are examining whether the death resulted from an assault over allegations of theft or whether any other motive may have been involved. Further investigation is in progress.
