Nagaland-based policy researcher, columnist and public speaker Ashraf Rehman has been appointed as a judge for the World Law Student Association (WLSA) International Debate 2026, marking a major milestone in his academic and public policy career.

The appointment is being seen as a significant achievement for Nagaland and the Northeast, highlighting the growing presence of professionals from the region on international academic and policy platforms.

Career in policy research and public affairs

Over the years, Rehman has worked extensively in the fields of public policy, governance, youth development and strategic affairs. His articles and research have been published in several national and international journals and platforms, including the Forum for Integrated National Security (FINS), The Observer Post, the Journal of Development Policy and Practice, the Review of Professional Management, Mainstream Weekly and The Policy Edge.

His work has largely focused on governance, national security, development and contemporary socio-political issues.

Apart from research and writing, Rehman has actively participated in debates, public speaking events and policy discussions, contributing to conversations on governance, law, public administration and sustainable development.

In 2023, he was selected for the Green International Fellowship, a programme that brings together emerging leaders working in sustainability and public policy. The same year, he also participated in the North East Youth Leaders Conclave, an initiative supported by the European Union that promotes leadership, democratic engagement and regional cooperation among young leaders from Northeast India.

‘A meaningful milestone,’ says Rehman

Reacting to his appointment, Rehman said it was an important moment in his journey and reflected years of dedication to debating and public discourse.

“I started my debating journey as a school student. Being appointed as an international debate judge is a meaningful milestone for me. It reflects years of commitment to debating, research and public discourse,” Rehman said.

International debate scheduled for July 21

The WLSA International Debate 2026 will be held on July 21, 2026, and is expected to bring together participants from several countries to debate contemporary legal and public policy issues.

As a judge, Rehman will evaluate contestants on legal reasoning, analytical thinking, quality of arguments and presentation skills.
