Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Jamia Hamdard have dropped in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 released by the Ministry of Education on Thursday.
Jamia Millia Islamia, which was ranked the third-best university in 2024, has now slipped to the 4th position. AMU, which stood at 8th last year, has dropped to 10th, while Jamia Hamdard has slid from 40th to 47th.
Jamia Hamdard, however, continues to hold its position as the best pharmacy college in India, followed by BITS Pilani and Panjab University.
In the overall category, Jamia Millia Islamia has retained its 13th place, while AMU has slipped from 16th to 19th. Jamia Hamdard has dropped from 62nd to 74th.
Jamia Millia Islamia has also been ranked 5th in ‘Architecture and Planning’, 8th in Law, 17th in Dental, 20th in Research, 24th in Engineering and 28th in Management.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has once again been declared the best university in India, with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) at second place. “IISc and JNU have consistently retained their positions at the top for the past three years,” the Ministry noted.
This year’s top 10 universities are IISc Bengaluru (1), JNU (2), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (3), Jamia Millia Islamia (4), University of Delhi (5), Banaras Hindu University (6), BITS Pilani (7), Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (8), Jadavpur University (9) and AMU (10).
In the top colleges category, five Delhi University colleges have secured the first five positions, Hindu College ranked first, followed by Miranda House, Hansraj College, Kirori Mal College and St. Stephen’s College.
Other colleges in the top 10 include Rama Krishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharm College, St. Xavier’s College, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, and PSG College of Arts and Science.
In the overall institutional ranking, IIT Madras continues to be India’s top institute for the 10th consecutive year, followed by IISc Bengaluru, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kanpur.
The Ministry said the NIRF ranking is based on five parameters: teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
