An attack in the picturesque town of Pahalgam, located in Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir, has left one tourist dead and at least 12 others injured, four of them critically. The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Baisaran meadows, a popular tourist destination known for its scenic beauty, accessible only by foot or pony.

Eyewitnesses reported that unidentified gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists visiting the area. Among the victims was a man who was shot in the head, with his wife heard desperately pleading for help. The attack was carried out at close range, triggering widespread panic and chaos among the tourists.

In response, forces have launched a massive cordon-and-search operation in the area, although no arrests have been made as of yet.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high-level security meeting in New Delhi following the attack. Senior officials, including the Home Secretary and Intelligence Bureau personnel, joined the meeting, while the Director General of Police of Jammu and Kashmir and other senior officers participated virtually, providing updates on the situation.

Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “cowardly and despicable act.” He assured the public that the perpetrators would “not go unpunished” and confirmed that joint operations between the Army and J&K Police were underway in the area.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack, calling it “an abomination” and describing the attackers as “animals, inhuman & worthy of contempt.” Expressing sympathy for the victims’ families, he confirmed that his colleague had been dispatched to oversee the treatment of the injured.

Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister and president of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), also denounced the attack, calling it a “cowardly act.” She emphasized that Kashmir has always welcomed tourists and urged a thorough investigation to identify security lapses and ensure future safety for visitors.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said, “Deeply disturbing news from Pahalgam of a cowardly attack on tourists that has resulted in tragic loss of life . Such violence is unacceptable and against the ethos of Kashmir which welcomes visitors with love and warmth. Condemn it strongly. Thoughts and prayers with the families of victims and wishing speedy recovery to the injured.”

As of now, one death has been confirmed, and 12 others have been injured, with four in critical condition. The injured have been rushed to a local hospital, where emergency treatment is being provided.
