Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said that only the BJP-led NDA can protect Assam from “infiltrators” and prevent demographic changes, as he campaigned for the upcoming Assembly elections.

Addressing rallies in Barpeta and Barchalla, Adityanath claimed that the alliance led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi would ensure both development and preservation of heritage.

“Only the NDA can free Assam from infiltrators and ensure that the state’s demography does not change,” he said.

Sharp attack on Congress and AIUDF

The BJP leader accused the Indian National Congress and the All India United Democratic Front of harming Assam’s cultural identity.

“The Congress had been in power for 60 years in Assam, but it only encouraged infiltration, violence and riots. It put the local culture and heritage under threat,” he alleged.

He further claimed that both parties were working together to “distort Assam’s culture and change its demography,” adding that such efforts would not succeed under an NDA government.

Campaign pitch: ‘Double-engine government’

Adityanath reiterated the BJP’s “double-engine government” pitch, saying coordinated governance between the Centre and state leads to better development outcomes.

He highlighted projects such as infrastructure development and initiatives like the Maa Kamakhya Corridor, while praising the leadership of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“Wherever NDA governments are in power, there is development along with respect for heritage,” he said.

References to national politics and cultural identity

During his speech, Adityanath also referred to national issues, including the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, linking it to the BJP’s governance model.

He said Assam holds a special place in India’s cultural and spiritual landscape, noting that people from across the country visit the Kamakhya Temple.

Elections round the corner

Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam is scheduled for April 9, with counting on May 4.

The BJP, along with its allies, is seeking a third consecutive term, while opposition parties, including Congress and AIUDF, are aiming to challenge the ruling alliance.
