Muzzammil Imam, brother of jailed activist Sharjeel Imam, has warned the public against a fundraising appeal being circulated in Sharjeel’s name, calling it fraudulent and saying it was created by unknown persons for financial gain.
Muzzammil said neither Sharjeel Imam nor his family had authorised the appeal or was seeking financial assistance for his legal cases.
‘Do Not Send Money’
“We request everyone not to send any money or make any donation in Sharjeel’s name on the basis of such posts,” Muzzammil said.
He urged people to share the clarification widely and called for those behind the appeal to be identified.
“The persons responsible for creating and circulating this misleading appeal should be identified, and appropriate criminal proceedings must be initiated against them for misusing Sharjeel’s name and misleading the public,” he said.
Sharjeel Imam, a researcher and activist formerly associated with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), was arrested in connection with the case concerning the alleged larger conspiracy behind the February 2020 North-East Delhi riots.
He has been in custody for more than five years along with former JNU student leader and activist Umar Khalid. Both have repeatedly sought bail in the case.
The Supreme Court has previously rejected bail pleas by Khalid and Imam, while granting bail to several other accused in the same case.
