Panic erupted at the Upgraded Middle School in Karu Tola, Sahugarh, Madhepura district, Bihar, on Saturday after more than 70 students fell ill shortly after consuming their mid-day meal, prompting urgent medical attention and protests by parents.

Students complained of vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, restlessness, and nervousness soon after the meal, creating chaos on school premises. Teachers alerted authorities, and parents rushed to the school, many accompanying children to Madhepura Sadar Hospital in ambulances and private vehicles. Hospital officials said most of the children are now stable, though one girl remains in serious condition under close observation.

Parents staged an angry protest outside the hospital, demanding accountability and a thorough investigation. Preliminary reports suggest a lizard may have fallen into the food, which was reportedly supplied by an NGO linked to the mid-day meal programme. Officials clarified that the exact cause is still unconfirmed, and food samples will be tested as part of the inquiry.

District Education Officer Sanjay Kumar visited the hospital, reviewed the children’s condition, and confirmed that a detailed investigation has been launched. “If negligence or irregularity is found at any level, strict action will be taken against the NGO and responsible individuals,” he said.
