The parliamentary committee examining the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. Members are expected to propose their own amendments to the bill, which will be debated and either adopted or rejected based on the majority’s decision. Senior officials from the Ministry of Minority Affairs will also attend to share their views and address any issues raised during the discussion.

Committee chairperson and BJP MP Jagdambika Pal said the draft report is ready. However, opposition members have requested more time to review the bill thoroughly. “We need to ensure all aspects are considered carefully before finalizing the report,” an opposition member said, emphasizing the need for an extension.

The deadline for the committee to submit its report is Friday, November 29, 2024. However, there is a chance the committee could request additional time to complete discussions and finalize its draft. On Monday, opposition members met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to press for an extension.

One of the members explained, “We met the Speaker to highlight the importance of comprehensive discussions. Rushing this process could lead to gaps in understanding and implementation.”

Mr. Pal acknowledged the demand but expressed confidence in the draft’s readiness. “We are prepared to present the report on time. But if more time is deemed necessary, the decision rests with the committee and the Speaker,” he said.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill aims to bring changes to the administration of waqf properties, and its progress is being closely watched due to its implications for the minority community.
