Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed “deep sorrow over” the death of Pope Francis, calling him a symbol of compassion, humility, and spiritual strength. The 88-year-old pope passed away this morning at the Vatican after a prolonged illness.

In a message, PM Modi said, “Deeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. In this hour of grief and remembrance, my heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community. Pope Francis will always be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility, and spiritual courage by millions across the world.”

PM Modi recalled Pope Francis’s special bond with India and said his affection for the Indian people will always be cherished. “He diligently served the poor and downtrodden. For those who were suffering, he ignited a spirit of hope,” he said.

The prime minister had met Pope Francis during the G7 summit in Italy last year. He said the meetings left a lasting impression on him and praised the pope’s vision for a better, more inclusive world.

“I fondly recall my meetings with him and was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and all-round development,” PM Modi said. “His affection for the people of India will always be cherished. May his soul find eternal peace in God’s embrace.”

In 2022, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) had requested Prime Minister Modi to invite the Pope to India. According to CBCI President Mar Andrews Thazhath, PM Modi had expressed interest in making the visit happen soon. However, due to the pope’s declining health, the visit could not take place.
