The Rejas Solidarity Forum has strongly condemned the police action following a solidarity gathering held here last week, labeling it “anti-constitutional” and accusing authorities of employing false charges and forceful tactics.
On September 13th, the Rejas Solidarity Forum organized a program at Vanji Square in Ernakulam. The event was held in solidarity with Rejaz M Sydheek, a journalist and left activist from Kerala who was arrested in Nagpur under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The gathering was attended by activists, political leaders, and journalists.

According to the Forum, a large police force was present at the venue from the beginning of the program, which they claim was an attempt “to create a fearful atmosphere.” After the event concluded, police arrested two individuals from the audience, allegedly using force. The Forum also alleged that a woman organizer, Niharika, was handled by male police officers without the presence of female personnel.
Police filed a case against the organizers and speakers, accusing them of not having obtained permission for the gathering.

In a press meet held on September 18th, the Rejas Solidarity Forum refuted the police’s claims. They stated that they had, in fact, secured the necessary permission for the program. They condemned the arrests and the manner in which they were conducted.
The Forum further alleged that the First Information Report (FIR) filed by police contained “false and manipulated” allegations. The charges in the FIR reportedly include holding an illegal gathering and blocking traffic.

Following the press conference, the Forum held a protest gathering at the High Court Junction in Ernakulam. There, they characterized the police action as an example of the “double stand” of the CPI(M) regarding UAPA cases. They accused the ruling party of speaking out against the UAPA at the national level while using it, and other charges, to suppress protests against the act within Kerala.
The press meet was attended by Niharika Pradosh, Adv. Avib, Dr. Hari PG, Shaneer, and Nithin AP.
