The Press Club of India has announced its engagement with proposed amendments to the Information Technology Rules 2021, formally known as the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

The Managing Committee stated that it is preparing to submit its feedback to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology by April 14, as part of the government’s consultation process.

Concerns Over Journalism and Free Speech

In its communication to members, the Press Club of India highlighted concerns about the potential impact of the draft amendments on journalism and freedom of expression guaranteed under the Constitution. It said the changes raise “deep concern” about the future of journalism and its functioning as a profession.

The organisation also thanked members who had submitted their feedback and said the consultation process reflects collective engagement on issues affecting the media ecosystem.

Joint Meeting of Journalist Bodies

To further deliberate on the issue, the Managing Committee announced a joint public meeting scheduled for April 11 at its premises in New Delhi.

The meeting will include participation from several journalist organisations, including DIGIPUB News India Foundation, the Indian Women’s Press Corps, the Network of Women in Media India, and the Delhi Union of Journalists, among others.

The meeting aims to discuss shared concerns regarding the draft amendments and coordinate collective responses from journalist bodies.

The announcement was issued by Press Club of India President Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty and Secretary General Afzal Imam. It emphasized the importance of unity among media organisations in responding to policy changes affecting the sector.
