A 30-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his father following an argument over his demand for mutton during the Hindu month of Shravan in Pune’s Warje-Malwadi area, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Mahesh Bhagwat Gaikwad. His father, Bhagwat Suryabhan Gaikwad, 64, and mother, Parvati Bhagwat Gaikwad, 60, have been arrested in connection with the case.
Argument Over Non-Vegetarian Food Turns Violent
According to police, the incident took place on the night of August 24. Mahesh allegedly returned home after consuming alcohol and demanded that his family prepare mutton for dinner.
The family was not preparing non-vegetarian food during Shravan. His father reportedly refused his demand, leading to an argument between the two.
The dispute allegedly escalated into a physical assault. Police said Bhagwat repeatedly struck Mahesh on his head and face, causing serious injuries. Mahesh later died from the injuries.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sagar Kavade said Mahesh regularly consumed alcohol and would often have arguments with his parents.
Mother Allegedly Tried to Destroy Evidence
Police also arrested Mahesh’s mother, Parvati, for allegedly helping her husband conceal the crime.
According to the investigation, Parvati, who works as a nurse, allegedly cleaned blood stains from the scene and attempted to destroy evidence after her son’s death. She also allegedly gave false information to Mahesh’s elder brother.
Mahesh’s elder brother later approached the Warje-Malwadi police and filed a complaint, following which the police began investigating the incident.
Couple Arrested, Probe Underway
The Warje-Malwadi police have registered a murder case against Bhagwat and arrested him for allegedly assaulting his son. Parvati has been arrested for allegedly helping destroy evidence.
Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mahesh’s death and the alleged attempts to conceal the incident.
