An explosion broke out in a chemical reactor at Sigachi Pharma Company in Telangana’s Medak district, late Monday, killing at least 10 people and leaving dozens injured. According to official reports, 11 fire tenders responded to the fire to contain the blaze and rescue survivors.
Initial estimates from ANI indicate between 15 and 20 people were injured, though local police and hospital sources claim the figure may be higher.
As of the time of publishing, Superintendent of Police Paritosh Pankaj said, ‘We have not recovered any bodies yet. Rescue operations are underway, and further updates will follow,’ according to a statement reported by ANI.
The explosion occurred in a reactor unit, triggering a massive fire that engulfed the plant’s industrial shed. Witnesses reported the blast threw workers up to 100 meters away and caused partial collapse of structures, according to hindustan times.
The plant is part of the Sigachi Industries group, a major manufacturer of microcrystalline cellulose used in pharmaceuticals and food additives.
The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear. Reports indicated the reactor cooling system may have malfunctioned, leading to overheating and a deadly blast.
This isn’t the first time the region has seen such a tragedy. In 2024, a similar explosion at SB Organics claimed six lives. That disaster, also attributed to inadequate cooling systems and unqualified staff at the worksite.
The Telangana Pollution Control Board, which had come under fire in the past for approving projects without ensuring safety norms were in place, is once again facing questions.
How was the factory operating? Were routine inspections carried out? Were workers adequately trained to handle such sensitive systems?
