The Sessions Court in Sealdah found Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case, guilty on Saturday. The judge, Justice Anirban Das, however, postponed the sentencing, announcing that the quantum of punishment would be delivered on Monday.
In a closed-door verdict, Justice Anirban Das said that the safety and security of the accused was also important, before sending him back to jail. During the hearing, the court complex was heavily secured, with over 300 security personnel present, as protests and slogans erupted outside.
Roy, who was convicted under Sections 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rape and Sections 66 and 103(1) for death and murder, faces a potential sentence of death or life imprisonment. During the proceedings, Roy claimed that he was innocent and had been framed. The judge informed him that he would have an opportunity to present his defense before the sentence is handed down.
The family of the deceased, a 28-year-old postgraduate medical trainee whose body was found on August 9 in a classroom at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, expressed gratitude for the guilty verdict, appreciating the court’s fairness.
The tragedy sparked protests from medical professionals, who demanded justice and improved security at public hospitals.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested the day after the crime. Although investigators claimed he acted alone, the victim’s family and fellow doctors raised concerns about the possibility of a broader conspiracy.
