Senior BJP leader Samrat Choudhary took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Wednesday, becoming the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party to hold the top post in the state.
The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Governor Syed Ata Hasnain at Lok Bhawan in Patna, in the presence of top leaders from the ruling National Democratic Alliance.
JD(U) Leaders Take Oath as Deputy Chief Ministers
Alongside Choudhary, JD(U) leaders Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav were sworn in as ministers and are set to serve as Deputy Chief Ministers.
Several senior leaders attended the ceremony, including Union ministers and alliance representatives, signalling unity within the NDA.
Leadership Change After Nitish Kumar’s Exit
The leadership change comes a day after Nitish Kumar resigned from the Chief Minister’s post, ending his long tenure in Bihar politics. He has since moved to the Rajya Sabha.
Choudhary was elected as the leader of the BJP and NDA legislature parties following internal discussions and consultations. His selection came after days of speculation over who would take charge.
A Historic Moment for BJP in Bihar
Choudhary, who joined the BJP in 2017 and previously served as Deputy Chief Minister, now leads the party’s first government in Bihar under its own chief minister.
He represents the Tarapur constituency and is seen as a key organisational figure within the party in the state.
With the BJP being the largest party in the Bihar Assembly, his appointment marks a significant political shift, with the party now directly leading the government rather than playing a supporting role.
The new government is expected to outline its priorities in the coming days as it begins its tenure under Choudhary’s leadership.
