Sharjeel Imam, the former Jawaharlal Nehru University research scholar and a prominent face of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests, has returned to Tihar Jail after completing a ten-day interim bail. Imam has been in custody since his arrest on January 28, 2020, and faces charges including sedition and provisions under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
Humanitarian Bail for Family Duties
The Karkardooma Court granted the temporary release on humanitarian grounds to allow Imam to attend his younger brother’s wedding and care for his ailing mother. Imam told the court that he was the only family member available to manage these responsibilities. The court considered his plea and approved the limited bail period, which remained strictly conditional.
Family Shares Emotional Reunion
Speaking to The Observer Post, Imam’s brother Muzammil expressed the emotional significance of the reunion. He said, “I cannot fully express what it means, but as a mother, you always want your son close. Even if it was for a few days, we were grateful to spend time together. Life is full of these moments. Today it was a little happiness in the middle of long years of waiting.”

Muzammil added, “After six years, even ten days felt very short, but we are thankful to Allah for letting us share those moments. The court gave us this small chance, and we are grateful.” He also said that such family time is rare for someone in custody and expressed hope for similar opportunities in the future.
Legal Battle Continues
Sharjeel Imam’s lawyer highlighted the next steps in his legal battle. He said, “The Supreme Court had given one year to apply for regular bail. We will file for it soon.” Imam has been a key accused in cases related to the 2020 North-East Delhi riots. Authorities allege that his speeches during the anti-CAA movement contributed to mobilising protests.

While granting the interim bail, the court imposed strict conditions. Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai directed Imam to furnish a personal bond of Rs 50,000 along with two sureties of the same amount. He was barred from interacting with the media or using social media during the bail period and was restricted to his residence and the wedding venues. Imam was also instructed not to contact any witnesses or individuals connected to the case and had to keep his mobile phone active with the number shared with the investigating officer at all times.
Supporters Gather for Wedding Celebration
The brief release brought together family, friends, and supporters who had travelled from across the country to celebrate the wedding. Muzammil recalled how the gathering turned into a small festive event despite the circumstances. He said, “Friends from different parts of India came to meet him. It felt like a celebration, and even though it was a short period, everyone cherished the time together.”
