Swetcha Votarkar, a senior journalist working with T News Telugu channel, died by suicide at her home in Chikkadpally, Hyderabad, on Friday evening, June 27.
Swetcha was found hanging in her bedroom. When her daughter returned home and saw the door locked from inside, neighbours helped break it open. She was unconscious and had no pulse when the ambulance arrived.
The police have shifted her body to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem.
Swetcha lived in Ram Nagar with her mother, Sreedevi, and her daughter. She had earlier worked with TV9 and other media outlets and was known for her fearless reporting. Friends described her as a courageous person who had inspired others during difficult times.
Her friends shared that she drew inspiration from her late father, a staunch communist, and that her name, “Swetcha”, means “freedom” in Telugu. Swetcha was divorced and was reportedly living with her partner.
Chikkadpally police are investigating the cause of her death.
