In Lucknow, where a 30-year-old doctor has been arrested for allegedly raping a 20-year-old female student inside the operation theatre of his private hospital. The survivor, who was admitted for treatment of epileptic seizures, was allegedly sedated before the assault in a case that has sent shockwaves through the city.
The Incident Inside Tejas Hospital
The crime took place at Tejas Hospital in the Indaurabagh area of Bakshi-ka-Talab on the outskirts of Lucknow. According to the survivor’s father, his daughter had been suffering from recurring epilepsy episodes and was admitted to the hospital on May 19 for treatment. On the afternoon of May 21, around 3 PM, she suddenly developed breathing difficulty.
The accused, identified as Dr. Vijay Kumar Giri, proprietor of the hospital and a resident of Sitapur district, took the patient to the operation theatre on the pretext of providing oxygen support. Her elder sister and a nurse initially accompanied her inside the OT. However, a few minutes later, the doctor instructed both to step outside and wait.
Sedated and Assaulted
In his formal complaint to the police, the father alleged that the doctor then injected his daughter with an anaesthetic through the intravenous cannula already attached to her hand. The powerful sedative caused her to lose consciousness completely. When she regained partial senses some time later, she realized the horror of what had been done to her. She ran out of the operation theatre in tears and narrated the entire ordeal to her father and elder sister.
The survivor told police that she had dropped out of school for a few years because of her medical condition and was currently studying in Class 12. She belongs to the Dalit community, and her family immediately approached the police with a detailed complaint.
Swift Police Action and Confession
Deputy Commissioner of Police Twinkle Jain confirmed the developments to reporters. “An FIR for rape has been lodged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the SC/ST Act at Bakshi Ka Talab police station,” she said. Police teams rushed to the hospital, conducted a thorough inspection, and detained Dr. Giri for questioning. Investigators seized the clothes allegedly worn by the accused during the crime as crucial evidence. The survivor has been sent for medical examination to document her injuries.
Police officials also claimed that during interrogation, the doctor admitted to the crime. He was formally arrested and produced before a court.
Government Orders Strict Action
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Brajesh Pathak took swift cognizance of the horrific case. He directed health department officials to seal the hospital immediately and initiate proceedings to suspend the doctor’s medical licence.
In a strong statement on social media, Pathak said, “The state government stands firmly with the survivor and her family, and strict punishment for the accused will be ensured.” The hospital, which the accused had opened in 2022 in a rented building, was sealed by authorities. The case has once again raised serious questions about the safety of vulnerable patients in private healthcare facilities.
