A Class 10 Dalit student was allegedly assaulted and subjected to caste-based and obscene abuse by a group of youths while he was returning home after attending an Independence Day programme in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi district.
The incident reportedly took place in Bhidiura village under the Suriyawan police station area. Police said the accused allegedly stopped the student on the way, beat him and recorded the incident on video.
Assault Video Allegedly Made Viral
According to police, the youths later circulated the video on social media, allegedly in an attempt to spread fear and intensify the incident.
The student’s grandmother, Kanti Kannaujia, approached the police and submitted a written complaint seeking action against those responsible.
Based on her complaint, police registered an FIR against three named accused and some unidentified persons.
The named accused have been identified as Shubham Upadhyay, Arjun Pandit and Ganesh Yadav.
FIR Registered Under BNS, SC-ST Act
Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Information Technology Act.
Bhadohi Area Officer Sumeet Tripathi said the matter was being investigated and that police were examining the video circulating on social media as part of the evidence.
He said further legal action would be taken against those found responsible after the investigation is completed.
