Hindu monk Maharaj Hiranmoy Goswami, accompanied by several young men, conducted prayers inside the Adina Mosque in Malda on Saturday, leading to a contentious situation.
According to local sources, individuals from outside the state, supported by some local Hindu youths, began performing religious rituals, including puja, within the mosque premises on Saturday afternoon. This action provoked anger among members of the local Muslim community, resulting in unrest in the area. The police were notified of the situation to address the tensions and an FIR was registered on a complaint filed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the custodian of the premises.
Nizamuddin Biswas, state secretary of the All Bengal Imam Muezzin Association and Charitable Trust, condemned the worship at Adina Mosque in Malda as a grave mistake, unjust, and criminal act. He expressed strong protest and demanded punishment for the perpetrators.
Police intervened at the scene, urging an end to the worship activities taking place. Several youths confronted the police, leading to a heated debate. Following the incident, there has been an increased police presence in the area to maintain peace and order. However, authorities have refrained from providing further comments on the matter.
According to The Telegraph, an FIR has been filed based on the complaint of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA and Malda unit president Abdur Rahim Boxi said, “We have discussed the issue. Police have appealed for religious harmony. The administration has handled the matter assertively. No violence was reported.”
