A Bengali labourer, identified as Matiur Rahaman (42), was allegedly beaten to death in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The family of the deceased has alleged that he was beaten to death and has demanded a proper investigation into the incident, as well as strict punishment for the culprits.
Matiur had been working in a gold shop in Jaipur, Rajasthan, for 20 years. He came home on leave five months ago and resumed working at the gold shop a few days ago. On August 28, the migrant worker was allegedly beaten up by some people in the dining room of the shop. With the help of colleagues, he was rescued and admitted to the hospital. Despite undergoing surgery, he did not survive. He passed away on Saturday morning, September 7.
Baharam Rahaman, Matiur’s younger brother who also works in Rajasthan, said that his brother and several other workers, including an employee of the shop, were severely beaten.
According to the family, Matiur had a dispute with an employee at the shop where he was working and was allegedly beaten by this employee and his associates. The shop manager said, “He had an argument with an employee of the shop.”
Khairul Alam, a local resident, said, “From the hospital where Matiur was first taken, it was reported that his physical condition was critical. He was severely beaten, and something inside his stomach was damaged. I contacted his brother, who lives in Mumbai, and he immediately traveled to Jaipur. Matiur needed surgery, so we collected money here and sent it to them.”
Roushana Khatun, the wife of the deceased, said, “He had been working in Jaipur since before our marriage. I learned over the phone that some people had beaten up my husband. They were from Bihar and Odisha. His injuries were severe, including a ruptured anus. He underwent surgery, but he did not survive. I demand strict justice for the culprits.”
West Bengal Minister of State Tajmul Hossain met with the family of the migrant worker after receiving the news of his death. He stated, “We stand with the family of the deceased and will inform the Chief Minister of Bengal so that the government can provide assistance to this helpless family.”
“The people of Bengal are hated in BJP-ruled states. That’s why Bengali migrant workers are dying one after another. Matiur died because of this hatred toward Bengalis. They can’t tolerate Bengalis. Earlier, they beat Sabir to death, and now they’ve killed Matiur. This is unacceptable,” the minister added.
The chairman of the Migrant Workers Welfare Board, Samirul Islam, said, “The incident has been brought to the attention of the Chief Minister.”
