Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted yoga’s role as a global force for good during his address at the 10th International Yoga Day event at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) on Friday.

“The world is looking at yoga as a powerful agent of global good. Yoga helps us live in the present moment without the baggage of the past,” PM Modi said. He said that yoga fosters inner peace, enabling individuals to contribute positively to the world around them. “When we are peaceful within, we can also make a positive impact on the world…Yoga is making new ways of positive change in the society,” he added.

The event initially planned for the lawns of SKICC on the picturesque banks of Dal Lake, was moved indoors due to persistent rain.

PM Modi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir, his first since assuming office for a third term, includes the inauguration of multiple development projects worth over Rs 1,500 crore and the launch of the Competitiveness Improvement in Agriculture and Allied Sectors Project (JKCIP) valued at Rs 1,800 crore.

Stringent security measures were in place for the visit, with over 7,000 participants trained in yoga asanas over the past three days joining the prime minister. The city was declared a ‘Temporary Red Zone’ for drone operations.

Ahead of the main event, a series of yoga sessions were held across the city and the valley, including a gathering at the iconic clock tower in Lal Chowk and a mega camp at Polo Ground.
