46,000 Postgraduates And Graduates Apply For Sweeper Posts In Haryana

More than a lack of educated candidates including 6,000 postgraduates, and around 40,000 graduates applied for a role of a sweeper in Haryana government departments.

Haryana Kaushal Rojgar Nigam Limited (HKRN) posted a job description for a sweeper which surprisingly attracted as many as 1.2 lakh educated applicants for the role, The Times Of India reported.

The alarming data shows the young applicants’ dire need to have a secure job despite being well educated. Between August 6 and September 2, the applicants who sought to get the role of a sweeper are graduates and post graduates from various fields. The job description didn’t specify how many positions they were offering in their advertisement.

The job specification included cleaning departments, public spaces, roads and buildings associated with the Haryana government. Despite the salary being somewhere around 15,000, the job advertisement gained massive attention from job seekers. The people, if selected, will also have to clean, sweep and remove garbage from public spaces.

An application, Manish Kumar, a postgraduate with a diploma in business studies said to The Times Of India, “In private schools and companies we barely get 10,000. Here, there is a hope for being regularly employed in the future. Since sweeping is not a full-day job, We can pursue other work during the day.”

He expressed that this sweeper position offers a “glimmer of hope for regular employment” and the flexibility to pursue additional work during the day.

Another applicant shared that applying for this job is a last resort after facing setbacks in securing a government position through the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC). With her family unwilling to fund further studies or coaching, she sees this role as a necessary step toward financial stability.

This unusual response underscores the current economic pressures many individuals face and their willingness to accept contractual roles in hopes of future opportunities
