Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, celebrated Diwali by visiting the historic Ghantewala sweet shop in Old Delhi, where he tried his hand at making traditional Indian sweets like imarti and besan laddoo.

During the visit, shop owner Sushant Jain welcomed him warmly and shared that the Gandhi family has been associated with the shop for generations. “He wanted to buy sweets for his home, friends, and relatives. I told him, ‘Sir, this is your own shop.’ When he came, he said he would make them himself and taste them too,” Jain told ANI.

Jain added that Rahul Gandhi’s late father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, loved imarti. “So I said, ‘Sir, you should try that.’ He really likes besan laddoos too, so I said, ‘Sir, you can make those as well.’ So he made these two items,” he said.

The shop owner also joked about Gandhi’s bachelor status. “All of India is talking about him being the most eligible bachelor. I said, ‘Rahul ji, please get married soon — we’re waiting so that we can get the order for your wedding sweets too,’” Jain said with a smile.

Rahul Gandhi later shared a video of his visit on X, writing, “I tried my hand at making imarti and besan laddoo at the famous and historic Ghantewala sweet shop in Old Delhi. The sweetness of this centuries-old prestigious shop remains the same even today — pure, traditional, and heart-touching. The true sweetness of Diwali lies not just in the platter, but also in relationships and society.”

He ended his post by asking people about their own Diwali celebrations: “Tell us all, how are you celebrating your Diwali, and how are you making it special?”

The visit took place during the five-day Diwali festival, which begins with Dhanteras and continues through Chhoti Diwali, the main Diwali day, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.
