A muezzin in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh has accused local police personnel of abusing and assaulting him outside a mosque. The incident took place on Wednesday morning in the Sarwat area and has sparked anger after CCTV footage surfaced online.
Muhammad Irfan, the muezzin of Medina Masjid, said he had just stepped out of the mosque when police officers from the Sarwat police post confronted him about the loudspeaker used at the mosque. Irfan said the officers spoke to him in abusive language and made comments that hurt religious feelings.
“I told them that we have written permission from the district administration for the loudspeaker. Even after hearing this, they continued to abuse me. When I objected, they started hitting me,” Irfan said. He added that the entire episode was recorded on the CCTV camera outside the mosque.
The video of the incident spread widely on social media, leading members of several Muslim organisations to visit Irfan and express support. A delegation later submitted a written complaint to the Senior Superintendent of Police. They have demanded strict action against the officer involved.
Local residents say the video clearly shows the behaviour of the police personnel and want the authorities to ensure accountability. The administration has not yet issued an official statement.
