A Muslim youth and an 18-year-old Hindu woman were found dead after allegedly hanging themselves from a tree in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, police said. The woman was dressed in bridal clothes, which led the police to suspect that the pair may have taken the extreme step after her marriage was fixed elsewhere.
The incident took place in Patti Kumharra village under the Chirgaon police station area. The deceased have been identified as Yazul, aged 20, and Muskan, aged 18. Both were residents of the same village.
According to the police, villagers noticed the bodies hanging from a tree located near an abandoned house and immediately informed the authorities. Police teams reached the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination.
Chirgaon Station House Officer Rahul Rathore said the case is being investigated from all possible angles. “We have sent the bodies for post mortem and are waiting for the report. At this stage, no complaint has been filed by either family, and we are examining all aspects of the case,” he said.
The fact that the woman was found in bridal attire raised suspicion among locals that the two were under emotional distress due to their relationship and the issue of marriage across different religions. Police told the media that there is a possibility that the duo took the step after the woman’s engagement was fixed with someone else.
However, family members of both Yazul and Muskan have denied having any knowledge of a romantic relationship between the two. They told the police that they were unaware of any such connection and expressed shock over the incident.
Police said further action will be taken after the post-mortem report and statements from villagers and relatives are examined. The case remains under investigation.
