The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a nationwide security alert to all states and Union Territories, warning of possible violence and sporadic protests following the recent US and Israeli military strikes on Iran and the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to senior government officials, the advisory was sent to Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police on February 28 amid rapidly evolving international developments that could impact India’s internal security situation.
States Asked to Remain on High Alert
The Home Ministry has directed security agencies to remain on high alert and closely monitor protests and demonstrations by both pro-Iran and anti-Iran groups. Large protests by members of the Shia community have already been reported in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Karnataka and Delhi.
In its communication, the Ministry asked states to keep a watch on activities near the embassies and consulates of Iran, the United States and Israel. Officials have been instructed to strengthen security around diplomatic missions, cultural centres and other establishments linked to these countries.
A senior official said states have been advised to “take adequate measures to prevent any untoward incident and to maintain law and order, peace and public tranquility.”
Likely Targets Identified
The advisory flagged potential threats from Shia militia groups and global organisations such as Islamic State and Al-Qaeda. Intelligence inputs suggest that extremist groups could try to exploit the situation to create unrest or carry out disruptive activities.
It also asked States to identify “pro-Iran radical preachers giving inflammatory sermons and provoking violent actions.”
Likely targets may include US and Israeli embassies and consulates, their staff, business establishments, tourist sites frequented by Western visitors, synagogues, Jewish community centres and Chhabad Houses. The advisory also mentioned that Iranian diplomatic establishments could face threats.
Monitoring Social Media and Public Spaces
The Ministry has asked local police units to intensify checks in crowded areas and vulnerable sites and conduct regular inspection drives to detect explosives, including improvised explosive devices. Directors General of Police have been told to ensure that quick response teams remain operational and ready to act swiftly.
Special emphasis has been placed on monitoring social media platforms to curb the spread of inflammatory messages, misinformation and rumours that could disturb communal harmony. Cyber cells have been directed to keep close watch on online content and take prompt action wherever necessary.
