As violence continues to escalate in the Middle East, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, discussing the ongoing regional situation and stressing the safety of civilians.
Netanyahu Thanks Modi for Support
Speaking to NDTV, Netanyahu described Modi as a “great friend” and thanked him for standing with Israel. He said, “I spoke to a great friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at length yesterday, thanked him for standing with truth, standing with Israel, and for the enormous friendship of the people of India. They are much admired and loved in Israel. I won’t get into details of the conversation; I spoke to him and many other leaders in the region and beyond.”
Modi Calls for Early Cessation of Hostilities
Earlier, PM Modi had emphasized the need to protect civilians and called for a quick de-escalation. Posting on X, he said, “Had a telephone call with PM Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the current regional situation. Conveyed India’s concerns over recent developments and emphasised the safety of civilians as a priority. India reiterates the need for an early cessation of hostilities.”
He also spoke with United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, condemning attacks on the UAE and expressing condolences for the loss of lives. Modi wrote, “India stands in solidarity with the UAE in these difficult times. We support de-escalation, regional peace, security, and stability. Thanked him for taking care of the Indian community living in the UAE.”
Regional Conflict Worsens
The US and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28, targeting key military sites, including locations near the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s office. Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks across Israel, the Gulf states, and a British base in Cyprus.
Hezbollah, an ally of Iran, opened a new front by firing missiles and drones into northern Israel. Israel retaliated with airstrikes in southern Beirut, hitting Hezbollah positions and senior militants. Lebanon’s state news agency reported at least 31 killed and 149 injured.
Casualties and Escalation
At least 555 people have died in Iran due to the US-Israel campaign, according to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, while eleven deaths have been reported in Israel. In Kuwait, several US warplanes were mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses; all crew members survived. An oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman was attacked, killing one person, while energy facilities in Qatar and Saudi Arabia were also targeted by drones.
US President Donald Trump has warned that attacks on Iran will continue until all objectives are achieved and vowed to avenge the deaths of three US soldiers.
