The National Students Union of India unit at Jamia Millia Islamia has strongly condemned a “serious security breach” at the university’s girls’ hostel on Campus A, where more than ten men allegedly entered the premises unlawfully and assaulted a female student. The organisation has demanded the immediate registration of an FIR against those involved and called for the resignation of the university’s Security Advisor.
According to NSUI JMI, the incident took place at around 9.45 in the evening when a group of men forced their way into the girls’ hostel premises and assaulted a student. The student body described the incident as extremely disturbing and said it reflected a serious failure of the university’s security system.
“Security Guards Absent When Threat Arose“
NSUI JMI pointed out a troubling contradiction in how campus security operates. While security personnel are frequently seen stopping and questioning students over minor matters such as returning to the hostel late, they were completely absent when an actual and serious threat presented itself, leaving female students frightened and exposed to danger.
The organisation noted that the hostel is located in an isolated off-campus area, making the security lapse even more serious. It said the Proctor and the Security Advisor must take full responsibility for allowing such a situation to develop.
Pattern of Security Failures, Says NSUI
NSUI JMI said the incident was not an isolated event but part of a pattern of more than a dozen security lapses and violent incidents on campus in recent times, including fights and breaches of campus safety. Despite repeated incidents, the organisation said the university administration had failed to take effective steps to protect students.
The student body placed five specific demands before the administration. It called for the immediate registration of an FIR against all suspects involved in the assault, strict action against the security guards who allowed unauthorised individuals to enter the hostel, the immediate resignation of the Security Advisor given the repeated failures under his tenure, proper training and strengthening of security staff along with strict monitoring mechanisms, and a transparent and time-bound investigation to ensure accountability at all levels.
“A place that should be the safest for women students has been compromised due to negligence and lack of accountability,” NSUI JMI said in its statement, adding that the safety and dignity of students could not be compromised under any circumstances.
The university administration is yet to issue a formal response to the incident or the demands raised by the student organisation.
