Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday shared glimpses of a relaxed moment from his official visit to Sikkim, where he joined local youngsters for a friendly game of football in Gangtok.
Posting pictures on social media, the Prime Minister described the session as refreshing. “Nothing like playing some football with my young friends in Sikkim on a lovely Gangtok morning!” he wrote, adding in another post, “Clearly, an energising football session with these youngsters!”
Dressed in a blue sports jacket featuring the tricolour, Modi was seen interacting with children on the field, walking alongside them and participating in a casual game.
Visit Linked to Sikkim Statehood Celebrations
The football session took place amid the Prime Minister’s two-day visit to the Himalayan state. He is in Sikkim to attend the closing ceremony marking 50 years of the state’s integration with India.

Later in the day, Modi is scheduled to visit Paljor Stadium, where he will participate in the statehood celebrations and address a public gathering.
Officials said several development projects worth over ₹4,000 crore will be launched, covering sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, connectivity, tourism and agriculture.
Cultural Outreach and Public Engagement
On Monday, Modi held a roadshow in Gangtok, where large crowds gathered to welcome him. He also interacted with Padma awardees and other distinguished individuals, discussing issues related to development, innovation and social welfare.
As part of his itinerary, the Prime Minister is also expected to visit the orchidarium at Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park, a major attraction showcasing Sikkim’s biodiversity.
Football’s Popularity in the Northeast
Football holds a special place in the northeastern region, including Sikkim, where it is one of the most popular sports. The region contributes significantly to Indian football talent, with many players representing top leagues in the country.
Modi’s interaction with young footballers was seen as a gesture connecting with local culture and youth during his visit.
Tight Security in Place
Authorities have put in place tight security arrangements across Gangtok and nearby areas due to the Prime Minister’s visit, with multiple programmes lined up over the two days.
