In Delhi’s Trilokpuri area, a 70-year-old mentally challenged homeless Muslim woman was attacked in the early hours of Friday, June 12. The incident came to light when a passerby made a distress call to the police control room around 6:30 AM, reporting an injured woman lying near Block 27.
When officers from the Mayur Vihar police station rushed to the spot, they found the woman had already been shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital by an ambulance. The police located the caller, a rickshaw puller, who explained he had left the scene after alerting the authorities. At the hospital, the victim was identified as a mentally challenged woman who lived on the streets and was known locally for asking people for money.
Her medical examination revealed severe physical trauma. Doctors found swelling and superficial injury marks on her face, indicating a brutal physical assault. While initial medical reports did not confirm rape, investigators have included charges related to sexual assault and molestation based on the violent nature of the attack.
CCTV Exposes the Sheer Brutality
The true horror of the crime only emerged when police inspected CCTV footage from the area. The chilling video shows the accused striking the defenceless woman with a brick and then attempting to sexually assault her. The footage left locals outraged and heartbroken.
A woman from the neighborhood described the victim’s terrible state to reporters. She said, “The clothes on their bodies weren’t even their own; they had borrowed them.” She further recounted the shocking condition in which the victim was found, explaining, “Her condition was so critical that she was drenched in blood; she was completely exposed.”
Community Voices Outrage and Religious Concerns
The attack has sparked fury in the local community, with residents expressing their anger over the treatment of the victim. Crucially, community members identified the homeless woman as belonging to the Muslim community and voiced their perception of biased justice.
One resident complained about the police response, stating, “If it had been a Hindu, there would have been a whole army of police, a whole lot of police vehicles parked here.” Another resident voiced a deep sense of alienation, remarking, “The country belongs to the Hindus; it doesn’t belong to us.”
Directly addressing the victim’s identity, a woman from the area asserted, “Yes, she was a Muslim woman; justice is dispensed based on religion.” These statements highlight underlying communal tensions and a sentiment among some residents that the police response might have been different based on the victim’s faith.
A strong demand for strict punishment also emerged, with a resident referencing a past incident of retributive justice. They stated, “Like what happened in Khoda, killing in return for killing; this should not happen to him when he is stopped,” insisting on lawful justice for the victim.
The Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Delhi Police arrested the accused, identified as 28-year-old Vishnu alias Vicky. Officers reported that he was heavily intoxicated at the time of his arrest and is allegedly addicted to drugs. Crime and Forensic Science Laboratory teams inspected the crime scene to collect vital evidence.
While the victim is conscious, doctors have informed investigators that due to her intellectual disability, she is currently unable to give a clear statement about her ordeal. Based on the medical examination and evidence gathered, police registered a case under Section 110, which deals with an attempt to commit culpable homicide, and added relevant sexual assault charges. The investigation is actively continuing.
