Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge paid tributes to soldiers who laid down their lives in the 1999 Kargil War on the occasion of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas.
In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said the nation would remain forever indebted to the courage, valour and supreme sacrifice of the soldiers who defended India’s borders.
“A humble tribute to all the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice while defending India’s borders, on Kargil Victory Day. The nation will forever remain indebted to your courage, valour, and supreme sacrifice,” he wrote.
Kharge also honoured the fallen soldiers, saying their indomitable courage, unparalleled valour and unwavering dedication to the nation would continue to inspire generations. He paid homage to the “immortal heroes” who sacrificed their lives while defending the motherland during the Kargil War.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on July 26 to commemorate India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil conflict, when the Indian Armed Forces recaptured strategic positions along the Line of Control after Pakistani troops and infiltrators occupied key mountain peaks in the Kargil sector.
The victory was achieved through Operation Vijay, supported by the Indian Air Force’s Operation Safed Sagar, and remains one of India’s most significant military successes.
