A 45-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Tripura’s Khowai district after he was suspected of stealing cattle, police said. The deceased has been identified as Jalil Rahman, a resident of Gilatali.
The incident took place early Thursday morning when Rahman was returning home with two cows he had purchased from a farmer using his own money.
Man Attacked While Returning Home
According to police, Rahman was travelling from Bagbar to his home with the cattle when a group of people stopped and attacked him at around 4.30–4.45 am.
Police suspect that the attackers mistook Rahman for someone involved in transporting stolen cattle.
“We suspect that the mob surrounded and attacked Rahman after mistaking him for someone who had come to transport stolen cattle. He had actually purchased the two cows with his own money and was returning home with them at around 4.30am when the attack took place,” said Ashish Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Kalyanpur police station.
Rahman was reportedly seriously injured in the assault. He managed to inform his family about the incident by phone.
According to the family, when they reached the area to take him home, they were also allegedly attacked.
Police Take Victim to Hospital
Police reached the spot after receiving information about the assault and took Rahman to a hospital. However, doctors declared him dead after he succumbed to his injuries.
Police have registered a suo motu case and started an investigation into the incident. The identities of those allegedly involved in the mob attack have not yet been established.
Police also said Rahman had no previous criminal cases or criminal record.
