Ranchi police have registered a case against five people, including four members of a family, for allegedly assaulting a Dalit woman, using casteist slurs against her and preventing her from drawing water from their well.
The incident reportedly took place on October 10 in Sector 2 of HEC Smart City, under the jurisdiction of Jagannathpur police station.
The woman, identified as Manju Choudhary, lodged a complaint on the day of the incident, a senior police officer told PTI on Tuesday.
Woman Alleges Caste-Based Abuse
According to Choudhary’s complaint, the five accused, who live near her house, had allegedly been preventing her from drawing water from their well since July 23.
She alleged that the accused assaulted her and subjected her to casteist abuse on October 10.
The accused have been identified as Amrendra Kumar, his wife Remi Devi, their two sons and another person, police said.
Jagannathpur police station officer-in-charge Nitin Kumar Singh said a case had been registered under relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Accused Family Files Counter-Complaint
Police said members of the accused family filed a separate complaint on Monday, alleging that Choudhary had assaulted them.
During the investigation, police found that the well was located on the premises of Amrendra Kumar’s house, Singh said.
However, the allegations of assault, caste-based abuse and humiliation are still being investigated. Police said appropriate action would be taken after the inquiry is completed.
