Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has appointed its first woman Vice Chancellor in the university’s 123-year history. Professor Naima Khatoon will take over the role, making AMU the third central university in India to have a woman as its top academic leader.

The Ministry of Education appointed Ms. Khatoon after receiving approval from President Droupadi Murmu, who serves as the Visitor of the university.

Ms. Khatoon has a long association with AMU, having joined the university as a lecturer in 1988. She gradually rose through the ranks, becoming a Professor in 2006 and serving in various administrative roles, including as Principal of the Women’s College.

With this appointment, AMU joins Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Millia Islamia as central universities with women at the helm. Begum Sultan Jahan also served as the Chancellor of AMU in 1920, becoming the first and only woman to hold that position.
