A shocking video has surfaced showing a 15-year-old Dalit boy and his grandmother being brutally beaten by officers inside the Katni Government Railway Police (GRP) station in Madhya Pradesh. The footage, reportedly from October 2023, shows officer Aruna Vagane, in charge of the GRP station in Jabalpur, assaulting 60-year-old Kusum Vanskar with a stick while she cries out in pain. The video also captures a group of officers kicking and beating her grandson.
Following the uproar, one officer has been suspended, and an investigation has been ordered. Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari criticized the ruling BJP government, led by Mohan Yadav, calling the incident an example of “oppression against Dalits.”
Sharing the video, Patwari stated, “Dalits of Madhya Pradesh are forced to live a horrific life under the misrule of the BJP. If the Chief Minister cannot protect the people of his state, he should resign immediately.”
The Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress also condemned the incident, accusing the police of committing violence under the guise of law and order.
According to Officer Vagane, the family was detained because Deepak Vanskar, Kusum’s son and Deepraj’s father, is a known criminal with 19 cases against him and is wanted by the railway police, with a 10,000 rupee reward for his arrest. She alleged that the family supported him in thefts, leading to their interrogation. Deepak was later arrested and is currently in jail.
Katni Additional Superintendent of Police Santosh Sehria confirmed the officer’s suspension and stated that an inquiry would be conducted if a formal complaint is filed. “We have not received any complaint in this regard, and if a complaint is filed, the investigation will be carried out based on facts,” said ASP Sehria.
