Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and expressed grave concern at the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and pledged  India’s support for the Restoration of peace and stability in the region as soon as possible.

The Prime Minister reached New York on Saturday after attending the quad leader summit in Wilmington where he had bilateral discussions with the US President Joe Biden.

On Sunday, Modi discussed India’s support for Palestine at the United Nations.

“Met President Mahmoud Abbas in New York. Reiterated India’s support for early restoration of peace and stability in the region. Exchanged views of further strengthening long standing friendship with the people of Palestine,” Modi posted on X.

Modi said that only a two-state solution would bring peace. He advocated for a ceasefire, the release of hostages and a return to diplomacy and dialogue.

Modi will not meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations General Assembly session as Netanyahu will arrive on September 24. Narendra Modi’s return is confirmed on the same day.

Modi also met members of the Indian American community at the ‘Modi and US’ mega community event in Long Island on Sunday afternoon.

India has underscored its commitment towards a just peaceful and lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine issue and reiterated that only a two-state solution achieved through direct and meaningful negotiations between the two sides will lead to peace.

The Union Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) states that between October 7, 2023, and September 16, at least 41,226 Palestinians have been killed and at least 95,413 have been injured.
