The BJP has filed a police complaint against Congress Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of assault and incitement following a scuffle during protests in Parliament on Thursday. BJP MP Anurag Thakur stated that the complaint was lodged under IPC Sections 109 (abetment to murder), 115, 117 (voluntary causing grievous hurt), 125, 131, and 351.
“We have detailed the incident that occurred outside Makar Dwar, where NDA MPs were protesting peacefully,” Thakur told reporters.
The altercation reportedly left BJP MPs Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput injured. Both were admitted to Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital with head injuries. Medical Superintendent Ajay Shukla confirmed that Sarangi had heavy bleeding and required stitches, while Rajput had briefly fallen unconscious and exhibited high blood pressure.
The scuffle occurred amidst protests in Parliament premises by both the ruling BJP and the INDIA bloc. BJP MPs accused Congress of disrespecting BR Ambedkar, while the INDIA bloc, led by Rahul Gandhi, demanded Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation over remarks targeting Ambedkar during a Rajya Sabha speech.
Anurag Thakur alleged a historical pattern of disrespect by the Nehru-Gandhi family toward Ambedkar, claiming “Nehru conspired to make Ambedkar lose elections and forced him to quit politics.” He further criticized Congress for failing to award Ambedkar the Bharat Ratna.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj accused Congress of exploiting Ambedkar’s legacy for political gain and highlighted the Modi government’s initiatives like the abolition of Article 370 and establishment of Panchteerth.
“Congress murdered democracy and now pretends to protect the Constitution,” Swaraj remarked, demanding an apology from Congress.
The incidents have led to adjournments in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. BJP and Congress leaders continue to trade barbs, with the BJP accusing the opposition of hypocrisy and the Congress targeting the government for its remarks on Ambedkar.
