The ongoing political debate over the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly resolution has sparked a war of words between the National Conference (NC) and Congress. On Friday, NC strongly criticized Congress for misinterpreting the resolution passed during the J&K Legislative Assembly’s first session.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), NC’s Member of Parliament from Srinagar, Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, stated that neither the Congress president nor the J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president has the right to misinterpret the resolution.
“The purpose of that resolution is to express the people’s disapproval of all the amendments and unconstitutional abrogation of the guaranteed (Special) Status of J&K from the year 1953 to 2019,” Mehdi said.
Mehdi further added that any misinterpretation of the resolution, even from within his own party, would be rejected by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “Even if anyone from within @JKNC_ tries to misinterpret the resolution otherwise and against the wishes of the people, they will be rejected and pushed to a corner of irrelevance,” he warned, recalling how BJP allies were sidelined in the last election.
This verbal clash intensified after Congress J&K unit president Tariq Hamid Karra told local media that the resolution did not call for the restoration of Article 370 and made no mention of it. His comments contradicted the NC’s interpretation, further deepening the divide between the two political allies.
“We have already said that the only thing left to demand after the Supreme Court verdict on Article 370 is statehood,” he said.
