A man wanted in multiple cow slaughter cases and carrying a reward of ₹25,000 was injured in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district late on Monday night, police said.

According to the police, the encounter took place in the Kaiserganj police station area after police received information about the whereabouts of the accused, identified as 40-year-old Ashraf Ali.

Police claim accused fired first

According to police, Kaiserganj Station House Officer Rajkumar Pandey received a tip-off at around 1 am that Ashraf Ali, who was wanted in a cow slaughter case, was present on the road connecting Harni village and Pyarepur.

A police team, including the Gandara outpost in-charge, reached the spot and surrounded the accused. Police alleged that upon seeing the team, Ashraf Ali opened fire at officers with an illegal .315 bore pistol.

The police retaliated, during which Ashraf Ali sustained a bullet injury to his right leg. He was overpowered and taken into custody before being shifted to the Kaiserganj Community Health Centre for treatment.

Senior officers reached the spot

Following the encounter, Superintendent of Police Vishwajit Srivastava, Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Ayush Vikram Singh and Circle Officer Dhirendra Srivastava reached the scene to review the situation.

SP Vishwajit Srivastava said the injured accused had a reward of ₹25,000 on his arrest and was wanted in connection with multiple cases.

“He has been identified as Ashraf Ali, aged around 40 years. Six cases related to cow slaughter are registered against him in different police station areas,” the SP said.

Weapon recovered, investigation underway

Police said they recovered an illegal .315 bore pistol, one spent cartridge and one live cartridge from the accused.

Officials said Ashraf Ali remains under treatment and further legal proceedings are being carried out in the case.
