G N Saibaba

Former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba passed away on Saturday at the age of 57. His death comes shortly after his recent acquittal from a life sentence.

On March 5, Saibaba was cleared of all charges by the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court. He had been arrested on May 9, 2014, for alleged links to Maoist activities and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was released from jail on March 7 after spending nearly a decade behind bars.

A division bench of Justices Vinay Joshi and Valmiki SA Menezes set aside his sentence and also acquitted five other accused in the case. Alongside Saibaba, Mahesh Kariman Tirki, Hem Keshavdatta Mishra, Pandu Pora Narote, and Prashant Rahi were sentenced to life, while a sixth accused, Vijay Tirki, received a 10-year jail term from a special court in 2017.

Saibaba was an English professor at Ram Lal Anand College at Delhi University, where he had been teaching since 2003. He was suspended from his position following his arrest in 2014.
