Four men who were arrested for assaulting and verbally abusing an elderly Muslim man, Haji Ashraf Maniyar on a train were granted bail on the first day.
Reportedly, the victim had requested stricter charges against the accused including an attempt to murder in his FIR but police didn’t approve of this. Soon after the FIR was filed, the bail was set at Rs 15,000 for each of the accused.
The decision has sparked a huge public outrage. All India Majlis-e – ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi condemned the decision and voiced his concerns about the increasing attacks on Muslims in the country.
The elderly man was on a train in Maharashtra’s Nashik district when he was beaten up by many men. The video of the assault went viral on social media drawing severe criticism and demands for arrests of the transgressors. Other men involved in the attack are yet to be identified. The only four accused are now set free.
Media reports confirmed that one of the accused is recognised as Aashy Avhad who is a son of an SRPF official. All the perpetrators were going to attempt a police exam in Mumbai.
In another incident that occurred recently, a Muslim migrant worker was lynched to death in Haryana over suspicion of consuming beef. Reacting to the two incidents, Rahul Gandhi said on X, “Those who have climbed the ladder of power by using hate as their political weapon are continuously establishing the reign of fear across the country. Hateful elements hidden in the form of mobs are openly spreading violence, challenging the rule of law.”
