Haridwar Row: ‘Ex-Muslim Padyatra’ Triggers Outrage at Har Ki Pauri Ghats

Tension erupts at Har Ki Pauri after ‘Ex-Muslim Padyatra’ reaches sacred ghats.

Tensions flared at the sacred ghats of Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar after an “Ex-Muslim Padyatra” reached the site over the weekend, triggering sharp reactions from local religious authorities and sections of the public.

The march, which began in Bijnor, was initially understood by the Shri Ganga Sabha to involve individuals who had already embraced Hinduism. However, controversy erupted after videos surfaced showing some participants wearing skullcaps at the Brahmkund area.

Sabha president Nitin Gautam said the visuals hurt religious sentiments and alleged that the event amounted to an attempt to disturb the sanctity of the site. He warned of legal action and reiterated that, as per local bylaws, non-Hindus are not permitted inside the Har-ki-Pauri premises.

Participants defend intentions

Organisers and participants rejected the allegations, stating that the padyatra aimed to highlight the rights and protection of individuals who choose to leave Islam and adopt another faith.

Activist Imroz Alam said the initiative was meant to ensure safety for those who face threats after changing religion. Others associated with the march emphasised that the Constitution guarantees freedom of belief and expression.

Concerns over communal harmony

The event has also drawn concern from members of the Muslim community, who said that while freedom of religion must be respected, public actions or statements that could hurt sentiments risk creating tension.

Observers note that while the Constitution guarantees the right to practise and propagate religion, it also requires that such expressions do not disturb public order or communal harmony.

Police monitoring situation

Authorities maintained a strong police presence at the site to prevent escalation. With videos of the incident circulating widely, officials are closely monitoring the situation and may review whether legal action is warranted.

The episode has once again brought into focus the delicate balance between religious freedom and maintaining harmony in sensitive public spaces.
